Working with Compressed Files

One of the most common problems that new Linux/Unix users ask is how to work with the massive number of different compressed files that exist and those that have leaked out of the Mac and Windows world.

Now comes this HOWTO, which in the best tradition of Linux documentation, is intended to help with this problem without getting bogged down in excessive complexity or technical jargon.

It covers a wide range of compression formats, some basic background on the format, the tools needed and where to get them, and examples for compression and decompression.

If there are other formats which I am not aware of, let me know at the martian engineer at gmail dot com, and I will have a look at add them here if possible.
